About Steve Phillips
Photography has been my life. From the first time I picked up a camera aged just 13 I have been enthralled by photography. I started my first job as a photographer aged 18 the day after finishing my last A level exam. That job was as a trainee press photographer with the Merthyr Express newspaper in South Wales. After a career in newspapers spanning over 30 years working for The South Wales Evening Post in Swansea, Western Mail and South Wales Echo in Cardiff and the South Wales Argus in Newport I am now a freelance photographer and videographer based in beautiful Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. I qualified as a press photographer by taking my NCTJ press photography qualification and became chief photographer at The South Wales Argus and Picture Editor at the South Wales Evening Post for 12 years, running the photographic departments of both newspapers. Over the years I have covered major news events such as Nelson Mandella's visit to Wales, royal visits and over 100 Wales international rugby matches including grand slams and the regional rugby teams such as the Ospreys and Scarlets. I have also covered Wales international football matches and Cardiff City and Swansea City football teams, being fortunate to attend Wembley finals twice covering Swansea City and photograph them in the Premier League.
I have photographed weddings since 2005 and utilise the skills I learned as a press photographer to calmly and creatively record your special day in a relaxed and professional manner. I am available for wedding photography throughout the UK but usually work within South and Mid Wales and the West Country. I record the fun and laughter of your wedding in an unobtrusive way allowing you to enjoy your special day to the full.
I also offer corporate photography, providing corporate headshots, editorial portraits, photography for business, as well as imagery for promotional materials, public relations and event photography. Clients include newspapers, small businesses and large corporations and trade associations. I am able to work to a detailed brief to brand values on location and to tight deadlines. I am also able to print photographs on site at events if required and can also offer Photo Booth hire offering a choice of fantastic magic mirror photo booths for corporate events, party's, proms and weddings through Cymru Photobooths my photo booth hire business.
I am able to produce awards and promotional videos and currently create videos for the South Wales Evening Post Business and Community Awards.
